Sapporo Art Park

Tuesday, Fiona and I took the subway and then a bus out to Sapporo Art Park. We first spotted this sculputre garden from the bus on our way to another nearby park in our first weeks here and knew immediately we needed to add it to our Sapporo Bucket List. It's a nearly 100 acre forest that is home to the Sapporo Art Museum in addition to nearly 80 sculptures desplayed throughout the forest and connected by walking trails.

Like every other park we've visited in Sapporo, it was beautifully done.

The entrance to the sculpture garden was, itself, a sculpture:

I'll try not to bore you with too many sculpture pictures and just stick to our favorites. Fiona got a kick out of becoming one of the "Ladies Waiting" in this piece:

This three pictures below are all of one large installation called "Hidden Garden" which was probably my favorite.

Inside that cement cone was probably the best echo chamber I've ever experienced.

More fun with the sculptures:

On one piece, Fiona was very excited to find a snail. We've seen lots of empty shells lying around, but this was the first real one she's spotted.

Deep in the woods, Fiona announced she'd found her new family and would be staying with them from now on...

Then a fly buzzed her and she quickly abandoned them in favor of moving on with me.

A couple other pieces that caught our attention:

I'd like to meet the artist who likes the crows enough to sculpt not just this one, but two others. Ugh those things are awful! This is definitely the closest you'll ever find me to one, and it still gave me the heebie jeebies!

Giraffe or dragon?

Fiona and I both instantly started giggling and singing, "The Circle of Life" when we saw this one:

During our visit, the Art Park was also hosting it's first indoor/outdoor exhibit: Cats! In addition to an indoor display of this artists' photography's, many more were also displayed outside among the sculptures. I've got to say, the fascination with cats is a little bizzare...

Needless to say, this was Fiona's favorite part of the Art Park so I guess, as they say, to each his/her own!
