job well done
While we were living in Chicago, Mica published a paper entitled "Providing a Voice: Qualitative Investigation of the Impact of a First-Year Engineering Experience on Students´ Efficacy Beliefs". But that's not even the point of this post! Before we left for England, she was selected and asked to write a short summary for a magazine, drawing attention to her article.
Quick aside: "papers" as they're known in the biz are published in "journals". This is where all the technical aspects of science, engineering and education are fleshed out. Magazines in technical fields are more like what you'd find in the supermarket checkout line (it was hard to resist saying queue). That is, they contain the science-y equivalent of pretty, half dressed ladies: short articles on work covering a broad scope of general interest and high impact.
Mica's work being highlighted by a particular magazine is quite an accomplishment. The magazine was electronically issued yesterday (here) and a flurry of email forwards arrived from people passing on their congratulations. In this process she found out her magazine article was picked up by a second magazine in the field! Job well done!
