The Day the UK Nearly Ceased to Exist

Monday morning we woke to some pretty heavy snow fall. The dusting of snow made Cambridge even that much prettier...

The amazing part was what less than two inches of snow did to this country! Here are just a few of the things that made Jason and I shake our heads in disbelief:

  1. Our bosses both sent out emails saying that they were snowed in and couldn't make it to work.
  2. All of the London airports closed.
  3. The city of London pulled all of their buses off the streets.
  4. The underground was temporarily shut down.
  5. Schools across the country were closed for two days.
  6. An email went out to my department telling everyone they could leave early due to the bad weather.
  7. Road conditions were described as 'treacherous' and people were advised to only go on them in emergency situations.
In short, the country just about fell apart at the seams! To be fair, this is apparently the most snow the UK has seen in 18 years, but still...all of that just because of 2 inches??

I agree, beautiful photos!

I have to tell you that in NM the same thing happens. It's not because 2 inches of snow is bad, it's because it's so rare that no one knows how to function around snow. Desert dwellers have no practice driving in the snow and think that they can still go the same speed even when the roads are slick. You can't imagine all the accidents that happen around here when there is any snow fall. Jason and I always joke that one snow flake falls from the sky and New Mexicans start skidding off the road.

Two years ago there was actually a real blizzard that broke the record for most snow fall in 50 years. NM has no snow plows so no one could get anywhere. Garbage trucks couldn't pick up trash (when they tried they kept skidding into block walls and cars), semi trucks couldn't get in so the grocery store shelves were bare in three days and school was canceled for one week. Coincidentally, Steve was born 9 months later. It was a VERY busy week at the hospital, lots of babies!. TMI?

Hi Mica and Jason,
JoAnn gave me this web address some time ago but I just now decided to check it out. Your photos are wonderful, you have an eye. I know tomorrow is a special day and I hope you can do something special to celebrate. Wanted to wish you birthday joys and health. Thanks for being you!
We are looking forward to a trip to Denver on the 21st to hug on the grandkids and spend time with Tyler and Lena. Hopefully we'll get some sun to soak up. It is very wintery here still.
Take care and May God Bless you guys.,
Aunt Wendy

Thanks guys...it's pretty easy to snap some nice photos when you're surrounded by amazing buildings blanked in snow!

Mary, I love it! What else are you to do when stuck at home for days on end??

Thanks for the note Wendy. Give Tyler and Lena our best. I'm looking forward to seeing you in September!
