Stone Phelps?

This whole 'Michael Phelps Smokes Pot' thing is really starting to irritate me. I don't smoke marijuana, I'm not for it's legalization, and I have no problem with the prosecution of those caught with it. Even more, it bothers me that someone who certainly knows that, like it or not, he's now a national (if not international) role model would make such an irresponsible decision. BUT, I also find the extraordinary efforts by the Richland County Sheriff's Office to mount a case against Phelps to be a complete joke!

Hey Sheriff Lott, have you checked out YouTube lately? You're going to be pretty busy if you plan on prosecuting every person you can spot smoking pot!

This portion of an article from the International Herald Tribune sums up my thoughts well:

On a "Good Morning America" broadcast Thursday, McCulloch characterized the arrests as "a fascination, if not an effort, to destroy a public hero."

[Sheriff] Lott has said Phelps should not get a break because of his fame. Harpootlian told The Associated Press that he believes police are being overzealous.

"I find it amazing the justification is they don't want to treat him any differently just because he is a celebrity, and he is being treated far differently than any other Joe Blow who might have smoked marijuana four or five months ago."

What do you think? Should he legally (morals and ethics are a whole different story, let's not go there...) be held to a higher standard just because he's famous? Is that constitutional?

Agreed, pretty much entirely. He's an idiot -- and I do think there's something to be said for getting taken down a peg when a significant amount of your career's success (and endorsements) is tied to being a "role model" -- but the hullabaloo over this really is out of hand.
