Cliffs of Moher (Ireland - Day 3)

We woke up Monday morning in Doolin and looked out the window of our bedroom to this amazing few of the Cliffs of Moher:

The window was a perfect frame for the cliffs! We really couldn't have lucked upon a better view. After breakfast, we hiked through town and out along the edge of the cliffs above. Doolin, like most small Irish towns and villages on the sea, was full of brightly painted shops and pubs:

As we hiked along, it quickly became clear why these cliffs were so sheer - the waves beat on them like this all day everyday:

Jason got as close as he could to the action with out getting soaked:

After hiking along this less drastic northern end of the cliffs, we drove on to the southern end where they became significantly more dramatic!

If you're a big enough fan of The Princess Bride, you might recognize the Cliffs of Insanity! The Cliffs of Moher are where that part of the movie was shot.

We even found a spot for a nice picnic lunch. Could you ask for a better view??

Look Moms! We almost fell off!

But don't worry, we made it back to safety!

After a long day of hiking, we visited a much more calm stretch of ocean. This little seaside town called Lahinch reminded me a lot of the small towns along the Oregon coast, but with a Hawaiian surfer "hang loose" sort of attitude. It was a nice place to warm up with some coffee and watch the surfers.
